Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.
Players are granted the option to challenge particular decisions from the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol already in use at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.
What Can Be Reviewed?
Players will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to review specific situations, such as:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- Whether a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
- Possible interference end of a point.
Notably, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.
Practical Application
An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.
The British player admitted it was a difficult situation for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Further Updates
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
